Hello!

Open House was slightly different this year. Our profs decided to have talks at HSS Building, Sem Room 6, accompanied by a student booth just outside. I just want to share with you the various commonly asked questions, and answers!

Q: What’s the difference between Literature and Linguistics?

A: They study fiction, we study fact. (by Hemma)

Q: How many languages do you speak?

A: It’s like asking doctors how many diseases they have; doctors study diseases, they don’t have them. Linguists study languages, we don’t have them. (by Dr Liu Hong Yong)

Q: Do you guys always use fancy software like Praat and Audacity?

A: Not really, it depends on what research you want to go into, but we do learn them for Phonetics and Phonology. It isn’t really that fancy, we just use them to cut sound clips, slow them down to hear the sounds better, replay sound clips over and over, and map out formants and spectrographs if we do phonetic analysis.

Q: Do you write a lot of essays?

A: We-ell… We write more research papers, that are like scientific papers complete with a hypothesis, methodology, data analysis, … all that jazz.

Q: Do you study English a lot?

A: Oh no, we look at a whole bunch of languages, even strange ones we have never seen at all.

Those are the only ones I remember well enough. Comment if you have any questions!
